Independent Malta

Malta finally gained its independence from Britain on September 21, 1964.

Labour was elected into government again in 1970, and retained power until 1987. Malta was declared a Republic on December 18th, 1974. On March 31st, 1978 Malta ceased to function as a British Military base.

Malta under the Nationalists applied for EU membership in 1990. The Labour Party was vehemently opposed to membership, and advocated a less intimate partnership with the European Bloc. A referendum held in 2003 showed that a majority of the population favoured full EU membership. Malta joined the European Union in 2004, and the Eurozone in January 2008.
