Bormla was declared a Parish dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in 1586. Construction of the parish church commenced in 1680 yet it was only completed in 1732. It was consecrated by Bishop Alpheran de Bussan. Pope Pius VII proclaimed it a Collegiate in 1822. The titular painting by Pietro Paolo Caruana was crowned in 1905 by Cardinal Domenico Ferrata; in 1955, Cardinal Federico Tedeschini adorned it with twelve stars. Tradition ascribes the titular statue of the Immaculate Conception to Carmelite nun Suor Maria de Domenicis. Little remains to be seen of the original statue as it was sent to the Milanese firm Antonio Gezzi e Figlio in 1905. to be almost completely covered with silver, save for the head, hands and feet. Another prized possession of the church is the Candia Crucifix, brought to Malta from Candia (in Crete) in 1669.
