Church of Our Lady Of Victories

South Street (Triq Nofsinhar)

This Church was erected on the location at which the foundation stone of Valletta was laid by Grand Master La Vallette in 1566. The design of this church may be attributed to Romano Carapecchia or perhaps Andrea Belli. The bodies of Grand Masters La Vallette and Del Monte were interred here until they were transferred to the Grand Masters' crypt at St. John's Co-Cathedral in 1579. The ceiling was painted by Enrico Arnaud. A bust of The Inquisitor of Malta, later to become Pope Innocent XI adorns the façade, just above the central window. This was commissioned by Grand Master Perellos in the 1690's. The church also contains a monument to Angelo Emo, the last Grand Admiral of Venice who died in Malta in 1793.

Fra Gerolamo Ribas Montelieu enlarged the church in 1752, giving it its present façade and belfry.
