Lower Barrakka Gardens

Il-Barrakka ta' Isfel - Quarry Wharf (Xatt il-Barriera), Valletta

Open daily from from 7.00am to 10:00pm

Set within a residential area on the St. Christopher Bastion well away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the Lower Barrakka is an exquisite vantage point over the Grand Harbour.

An elaborate monument erected in honour of Sir Alexander Ball in 1810 is certainly the most prominent landmark in this garden. This is a construction in the style of a Greek temple with a sloping roof over four allegorical figures symbolising War, Prudence, Justice and Immortality. These figures were sculpted by Vincenzo Dimech and are set in niches behind fluted doric collonades.

Walk past the Ball monument towards the arched pathway for a splendid view of the Siege Bell and a bronze corpse-like figure representing the victims of the 1942-43 Siege of Malta.

A bronze sculpture of an unashamedly nude Aeneas (Enea) by Ugo Attardi was erected here on the occasion of Malta’s accession to the European Union.
